Almost two years ago, Steve’s lovely wife got him tickets to The Sundance Film Festival. As a part of the gift, Monty and I acted as his grateful companions. This sounds like the making for a 1980’s raunch comedy, but it wasn’t. It was, however a wonderful experience of film appreciation that I will always treasure. While at the festival we got the opportunity to see a collection of shorts and two features. Not a bad film in the bunch, as my cohorts can attest. The film that took the prize for us was the last film we saw:Tucker and Dale Versus Evil. The film was brilliant in its comedic and believable send up of the slasher genre. And after the film was over, I thought to myself: “There is no way this isn’t getting distribution. It hit all the right notes!” As the lights came up and director Eli Craig took the stage, he informed the audience that his film, in fact, did NOT get picked up.
He kept a stiff upper lip and laughed with the audience as he told stories of the film’s production. He took questions (even my asinine one about a poster), but you could tell that he expected more than this. Well two years late, Tucker and Dale Vs. Evil has hit DVD and Blue Ray and you all should pick it up. For you genre fans, this film features in leading roles, Alan Tudyk (Firefly) and Tyler Labine (Reaper). If you haven’t seen this film, and enjoy horror /comedies, do yourself a favor and pick this one up. If you have seen this movie and want to watch a good companion piece, pick up Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon, you will not be disappointed.
